The Politicians Staying Silent on Stephen Miller’s Racism Are Speaking Volumes
Stephen Miller is the product of American white supremacy. Getting rid of Miller is the task at hand. Getting rid of the entire system should be our goal.
CW: racism, xenophobia

When you think about the Trump administration, a few things will likely come to mind. You might think about the fact that dozens of women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct. Maybe you remember him referring to predominantly Black countries as “shithole” countries.
What I just can’t get out of my mind are the far-right immigration policies his administration puts forward. His tenure in the White House has been marked with racist and xenophobic policies such as family separation and the Muslim ban. These policies all have one thing in common— white supremacist Stephen Miller. The 34-year-old is a Senior Policy Advisor to the President; during his time in this role, Miller has been the subject of criticism as the main architect behind Donald Trump’s horribly racist anti-immigration agenda. The man is such a xenophobic piece of shit that his uncle wrote an article in Politico calling him a hypocrite.
It should come as no surprise to any of us that Stephen Miller sent no less than 900 racist emails to employees at the far-right publication Breitbart. In these leaked emails, Miller revealed his obsession with white nationalist literature, neo-Nazi talking points, and Black/brown immigration. He is laser-focused on ending nonwhite immigration to the United States, citing eugenics-era immigration laws which were also a favorite of Adolf Hitler. Great company for an American government official to be keeping.
Despite the email leak being less of a surprise and more of a confirmation of Stephen Miller’s white nationalist tendencies, he has remained in his position at the White House. These leaked emails should be met at a minimum with politicians on the left and right disavowing white supremacy and demanding the removal of Stephen Miller as advisor to the president.
Keep in mind that Representative Ilhan Omar (D- Minn) was met with calls for her resignation when she tweeted criticism of AIPAC and the Israeli government. Not only did Republicans want her to step down, but members of her own party were publicly criticizing Omar and allowing her to be the victim of anti-Black Islamophobia. When she accused Stephen Miller of being a white nationalist, the accusations of anti-Semitism brewed again. White House surrogates accused her of unfairly targeting Jews— namely, Stephen Miller. With the leak of these emails, it sure looks like Ilhan Omar had the right idea about Miller, whose Jewish ancestry really has no bearing on whether or not he supports white nationalism.
So far, over 80 Democratic lawmakers have called for Miller’s resignation. Julian Castro, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, and Bernie Sanders are the 2020 presidential candidates who have also taken a stance against the white supremacist. Notably absent from that list are Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, who some Democrats swear can flip swing voters to the Democratic side in 2020. With their silence on Miller, I can’t help but wonder if the swing voters they’re hoping to court are just white racists who they’re trying not to offend.
To remove Miller and acknowledge his hand in some of the most racist policies of the Trump presidency would be a good step forward, but it is the bare minimum for Americans who have yet to acknowledge the white supremacy this country was founded on.
Stephen Miller is the product and legacy of American white supremacy. Democrats and Republicans alike hold debates and give speeches on stolen Indigenous land or in universities built by enslaved Black people. Many of us are not taught about Japanese internment or American imperialism and war crimes abroad. Instead, we are expected to forget the horrors of our past and be proud to be American.
Without their acknowledgment of the anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, settler-colonial origins of the United States, politicians will never really give BIPOC the representation we deserve in government. Getting rid of Stephen Miller is the task at hand. Getting rid of the entire system should be our goal.
