Donald Trump Puts More Americans At Risk By Ignoring White Terrorism
The loss of innocent lives for no other reason than the fact that they’re non-white is the hard price Americans must pay for electing an egomaniac who panders to white nationalists.
White domestic terrorism is one of the single greatest threats to our nation’s homeland security. Emboldened by the campaign and election of Donald Trump, white nationalists and their sympathizers seem to have grown more aggressively brazen and outspoken in recent months, openly and unapologetically threatening the bodies of non-white persons whom our government has labeled as dangerous.
Examples abound, but this recent one, involving Adam W. Purinton, a veteran U.S. Navy person and “regular” at a bar and grill in Olathe, Kansas, stands out for its irrationality and gruesomeness.
Late Wednesday, Purinton stepped into the bar, as usual. Only this evening, after spotting and singling out two Indian patrons, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, he instigated a confrontation.
After being asked by the establishment to leave the premises, the enraged Trump supporter repeatedly returned, shouting “get out of my country” before shooting and killing Kuchibhotla and wounding Madasani. The latter is currently in the hospital convalescing.
The loss of innocent lives like Mr. Kuchibhotla, who still had so much of life to live, so many more contributions to make and so much more love to offer their families, is the hard and inexcusable price we must pay for electing an egomaniac who harnesses a thrill from pandering to white supremacists and demonizing Muslims. It’s the price we pay, every day, when a far-right federal administration feverishly refuses to prioritize the activities of white nationalist organizations, even amid overwhelming evidence that the actions of white hate groups are on the rise.
I suppose one should not expect more from an administration that opted to advance the former chair of the infamous alt-right news rag Breitbart, Steve Bannon, to oversee the National Security Council. Still, prescience aside, just because we saw the escalation of hate crimes against non-whites in the Trump Era doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything within our power to expose and exorcise our country of it.
And now is not the time to retreat or slow up in this effort.
For the more Trump issues social-hall passes to white nationalists to roam the streets and institutions of our country, behaving like the absolute monsters we know they are, the more at risk of violence and, ultimately, death all Americans will be.
Correction: an earlier version of this article misspelled the name of Srinivas Kuchibhotla. It has been corrected. We regret the error.[adsense1]
