This Self-Care Sunday, we say #TreatYourself! The holiday season can be rough on everyone and it’s impossible to be truly seen and heard by all of those around you. While very few things can be solved through material possessions, sometimes a little bit of retail therapy or me time can do wonders. Today, we propose that it is time to take a moment and a few bucks out of the budget to treat yourself in order to get through the holiday hassle, #SelfCareSunday style.
Here are 10 inexpensive self-care items to #treatyoself this holiday season:
1. Skin Care
Sometimes a simple face mask is enough to lift you out of your dark mood. Be it for clarifying, repairing, or soothing, putting a face mask on can be an invigorating or meditative experience. For a cheap thrill, the Daiso Japan Cosmetics Collagen Face Mask is great at a mere $1.50 per mask. For a more expensive option, the Glam Glow Youthmud Tinglexfoliant Treatment is wonderful, clocking in at $22 per 0.5 ounce.
Nearly nothing improves my mood like buying a new lipstick. Being surrounded by your favorite color can be your first line of defense in feeling vulnerable or not good enough for the world. Flip into femme warrior mode with a powerful coat of color or hint at it with a slip of gloss. Be bold – the best part of makeup is that if you do not like it, it comes off! Don’t be afraid to try something new.
3. Cozy Blanket
Few things reward an introvert like being able to come home to a cozy space and bask in peaceful solitude. What better way to do it this winter than to come home to the warmest, fuzziest blanket you can find? Forget #NetflixAndChill, we’re team #NetflixAndHibernate.
4. Warm Slippers
Riffing off of the cozy blanket, why not grab yourself a great pair of slippers? We’re not talking about those God awful slipper socks that your grandma bought you that shrunk to the size of doll socks when you put them in the dryer. Why not try these guys on for size and stay warm throughout the winter?
5. Chocolate Therapy
Need an endorphin boost? Put down the Dollar Store chocolates at the holiday party and grab the good stuff. Besides, you don’t want the gross coating of palm oil on the roof of your mouth, the unnecessary poly-saturated fats or the blood of a million slaughtered orangutans on your hands for supporting the evil industry that deforests literal millions of acres of rain forests each year, do you? We’re pro-fat, but save it for the good stuff like these amazing chocolates from Dandelion. Dandelion is rad because they support women-run chocolate growing co-ops… learn more here.
6. Yoga Socks
Up your yoga game with these no-slip yoga socks. Safety first – no one wants to show up at the emergency room explaining that their triangle-pose put them there — we’d much rather you get the chance to show that cute doctor your downward dog, if you want what we mean.
What better way to help channel the positive energy and self-awareness that you are fostering right now than with a beautiful new journal? The holiday season is the perfect time to find a new one as there are multitudes of beautiful blank bound books for sale. An even better suggestion? Wait until just after Christmas when all of the specialty gift items are on clearance and snatch yours up then! Otherwise, hit up Etsy for something beautiful and handmade. We love this one.
8. Lotions and Soaps
Aromatherapy does wonders to elevate ones’ moods, especially during dreary gray winter days. Trying a new lotion or soap in your favorite scent will do wonders to elevate your mood. Try a citrus blend for just that!
9. Plants and Flowers
Who says you need to wait for someone else to buy you flowers? TREAT YOURSELF! Grab a bouquet or a plant that makes you happy. Want something that lasts longer than a few days but you don’t have a green thumb? Find a potted succulent! While it is still possible to kill them, these desert dwellers are used to arid soil and do not require frequent watering. Just find a spot with adequate light and water as directed. Air plants are also great for this same reason!
Say “fuck it” by doing just that. Everyone deserves a quality sex toy that gets the job done just right. We recommend checking out Good Vibrations, SheBop, Toys In Babeland, or other equally feminist stores with a conscience and excellent customer service. There’s something for everyone – don’t be afraid to ask questions to find the right toy. (Protip: there are discount vibes on Groupon!)
