This had to be one of the biggest trends of the night, and with no question. White is a neutral color, it looks stunning against a red carpet and allows you to play up the cut of the dress and mess around with accessories. No one really quite pulled it off like Kate Hudson in this Versace gown with jewel encrusted cut outs though. I mean…..
This trend is a red carpet staple for obvious reasons: glitter gets you noticed. The more intricate, the better. Each of these ladies look like stunning pieces of artwork all on their own. And none of them were even nominated! (Two of them aren’t even actresses!) Some frown upon some attendees upstaging the nominees. I say, if you got it, flaunt it. And these ladies had it. #sorrynotsorry
Something I love to see on a formal red carpet is something daring. And what’s more daring than wearing separates in a sea of gowns?! Lorde and Emma Stone get extra props for bringing pants into the mix and totally killing it.
This one was a bit controversial amongst even the fashion elite. Even at 45, J.Lo ceases to amaze me with chicly sexy looks that just work. This was one of those looks. Jemima Kirke‘s choice recieved a lot of flack from the worst dressed lists, but I’m giving her cred for going with a bold statement and rocking the shit out of it. I wouldn’t expect anything less of brave and brusque Jessa (her character on Girls).
I don’t see any second place looks here. These ladies might be vying for the gold, but in our opinion, they’ve managed to do just fine in a silver studded blaze of glory. Uzo Aduba was one of those looks that kind of got lost in the mix, but she always manages to sneak up on us with some amazingly tailored and stunning looks. I’m going to take out some time to give Reese Witherspoon some flack though. We get it; you have old Hollywood good looks, flowing blonde hair and you look good in a classic silhouette. But please, switch it up next time. Letting it slide for now, but I’ll be watching you come Oscar season.
Always a difficult color to pull off what with the matching carpet (pause for inappropriate joke you’re probably making in your head) but these 3 managed to pull it off impeccably. The voluminous shape of Taylor Schilling‘s Ralph Lauren gown is flawless and is a tribute to my number one rule when going to a major event like this: NO WRINKLES! Allison Williams is gorgeous in Armani Prive as well and I mean, Heidi Klum must’ve gotten lost on her way to the hot mom’s meeting that was going on near by, but we’re glad she showed up wearing this killer Versace number looking absolutely dynamite (seriously though, what’s she doing at the Golden Globes?).
Lupita Nyong’o and “red carpet fashion” have honestly just become synonymous for me, so it’s no question she had to show up on this list at some point. Plus it helps that she’s wearing Giambattista Valli a.k.a. my favorite show this last spring/summer. And Katherine Heigl (again, not sure why she was there) manages to look amazing just based off of the fit of this dress alone. The color is kind of “eh” but them curves though! #YAAAAASSSS
The One Dude Who Did It Right
BABY EDDIE REDMAYNE looking like he’s going to his first Golden Globes, all dapper and wearing velvet. You go Eddie. You deserved that win. And not just because you’re adorable, and British and sweet as f*** but because I cried about 4 times watching The Theory of Everything. P.s. I love you… P.p.s. I’m trying to pretend his wife isn’t there but, I guess her dress was alright too.
