I have mixed feelings about Etsy.
On one hand – it’s one of the best places to find hand-made siamese cat jewelry. On the other, it now allows for factory made goods, redefining what “hand-made” actually means. Don’t get me wrong. I still use it to buy said jewelry, and I still sell on it, but probably not for long. I am currently transitioning away from this once great DIY superstore, and I am definitely more discerning when browsing their site for future purchases.
Recently, Etsy did introduce me to Teja Jamilla: a brilliant crafter & Lolita fashionista from Somerset. She hand-screenprints thick, durable tights with “vintage inspired designs” (Teja Jamilla). I immediately fell-in-love with her Pirate Printed Tattoo Tights and her Art Nouveau Printed Tights. I also really appreciate her size variety – ranging from child-size to plus-size. She is also really nice & readily able to take custom orders. Win!
So while Etsy may not be entirely up my alley anymore – it does still provide me a way to get a pair of hand-printed tights directly from their maker, who is half-way around the world.
Dear Internet: please provide an Etsy alternative. Srsly.
