My sexual accessibility has never been up to me, and this was a crucial and painful epiphany to have. Content Warning: this essay mentions depression and instances of sexual coercion. It’s not that I haven’t been celibate before. As someone who lives in the gray area of the asexual and aromantic spectrums, I’ve gone long […]
6 Celebs Who Came Out As Sexually Fluid
By now, the word is more than out, it’s exploded – actress and activist Amandla Stenberg officially disclosed her sexual fluidity in a recent collaboration with Teen Vogue, by coming out as bisexual. Stenberg is the subject of the magazine’s February cover story, written by Solange Knowles about her budding career in social justice activism, and made the boldly resonating and revealing statement: “It’s a really, really hard thing to be silenced, and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t be in. As someone who identifies as a black bisexual woman, I’ve been through it and it hurts and it’s awkward and it’s uncomfortable.” In her brave declaration, Amandla not only raised awareness for others who identify as sexually fluid (not ascribing to any one sexuality or sexual preference) in a world that forces people to label themselves, but continues to raise awareness for the ongoing insightful entity that is #BlackGirlMagic (a hashtag turned social movement denoting the often unseen brilliance of Black girls/womyn). With all the media attention her coming out is garnering, we here at Wear Your Voice thought it would be the perfect time to draw your attention to additional social influencers who have recently disclosed their sexual fluidity, and are celebrating it for the world to see!
This powerhouse of Spice Girl fame informed the Guardian newspaper in 2014: “People call me lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual, but I know who’s in my bed and that’s it. I have a huge libido and a great sex life… Well, I did have a four-year relationship with a woman. But I’ve been very happily married for seven years to a penis. Ha ha! An amazing guy.” We love how she just broke it down – who’s in her bed is her business, but she’s not at all ashamed to divulge it could be man or woman (at least before her current marriage).
“The video was to represent the young woman today – it’s not the traditional woman anymore – and not the specifics of ‘Am I gay? Am I straight? Am I bi?’ I’m making the rules for myself, and I don’t have to be stuck down to one label. I don’t feel the need to define nothin’ to nobody, because I’m always changing. Why say that I’m this or that when I might not be tomorrow?” she says. “I’m gonna follow my own feelings and my own heart.”
Lily Rose Depp, Cara Delevingne, and the “Self Evident Project”
Recently, the “Self Evident Project,” (highlighted by the “We Are You” tee-shirts) by artist iO Tillett Wright has highlighted thousands of people “in the U.S. who are ANYWHERE on the LGBTQI spectrum.” Specifically, iO’s goal has been to reach 10,000 people, and this has included the likes of Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily Rose to actress and model Cara Delevingne – both shown below “coming out” in this way as sexually fluid. This serves as an important reminder to the much-needed modeling finally given to thousands of youth who may also identify as sexually fluid, but have taught to be ashamed of that fact.

America’s Next Top Model favorite Nyle DiMarco has recently come out as sexually fluid to his Twitter followers. When asked if he is more into “boys or girls,” DiMarco simply responded “fluid,” which again helps to illuminate the wide LGBTQ spectrum. He even added a link to an Everyday Feminism article about fluid sexuality, which to us was an act of intersectional feminism in and of itself. It is especially notable that Nyle is the only male-identified person on this list, highlighting the fact that it may be far less socially acceptable for men to identify in this way, and now serving as a beautiful example of that to thousands of fans – some of whom may be feeling the very same way with no prior example to look up to.
