Lena Dunham Halloween costume

Lena Dunham Halloween costume

Not going to lie. I genuinely enjoy hating Lena Dunham. Once upon a time, I really liked her, but then my White Feminist bubble was popped. I learned a lot more about the world around me and discovered how disgustingly problematic 90 percent of the things that come out of Dunham’s mouth are.

In yet another instance of horrible things that Lena Dunham does, the whiny starlet exploits those who Trump has attacked. Hold on to your pussies, everyone.

Appropriately tagged “#imanasshole,” her self-congratulatory Halloween costume could have actually been a strong protest and sent an strong message. Instead, her costume further objectifies the women who have been physically assaulted by Trump and makes light of the rape allegations that have been made by victims as young as pre-teens.

Instead of dressing as a “Grabbed Pussy” for Halloween, Dunham could have sided with victims of abuse by simply altering the costume to be #PussyGrabsBack. Instead of disembodied hands attached to her, she could have sharpened her claws and fangs, sending a message that people with vaginas can and will fight back.

Dunham exemplifies the nuances that many white feminists (including myself) often miss. Why? Because privilege, mine included.

It can be easy to miss the mark. However, one can simply take a step back and ask oneself a few self-regulating questions before inserting one’s stinky old pair of Toms in their mouth the way Dunham so often does.

  1. What is the message that I am trying to convey?
  2. Is it only funny to me (or to people who look like me)?
  3. Does it hurt anyone in the process?

Dunham is no dummy. She’s got the academic chops and knack for writing to produce some potentially great things if she could get out of her own problematic head. Dunham seems self-aware enough to create characters based around how much of an asshole she is: imagine if she put that energy into unlearning some of the toxic shit she perpetuates.

Do better.
