StyleCrush: Syed Sohail of The Prep Guy
This week’s StyleCrush is Toronto’s Syed Sohail of The Prep Guy. You may be thinking, “Whaaat? Preppy style?” since we at WYV typically tend to be a little more funky. However, we appreciate a strong sartorial presence of any kind and we adore the way Sohail incorporates simple, classic pieces for a bold effect.
Elements of his traditionally masculine, refined style can be incorporated into anyone’s wardrobe. That, and his eye for quality, are what make Sohail’s style mesh with our own. It’s worth mentioning that his beautiful site is a dream to surf.
WYV: How do you describe your style? What informs it?
Syed Sohail: I like to call my style “preppy with a modern twist.” I love wearing a traditional look or style and adding an unexpected/unique twist to it. My style is largely informed from my instinct and occasionally street style, runway shows, magazine editorials and look books.
WYV: What inspired your brand/blog/project?
SS: My blog, The Prep Guy, is a men’s fashion and lifestyle blog, which is designed to help inspire the real man to elevate their style game. The idea of the name “The Prep Guy” came from my love of preppy aesthetics. Eventually the name became a lifestyle, where every guy can be “The Prep Guy” or a Prepster. I use my blog platform to communicate my personal experiences with fashion as well as external resources such as runway shows, magazines and releases.
WYV: Who are your three top StyleCrushes?
SS: My top three StyleCrushes would be Zendaya because she is so versatile, Kelvin of Notoriously Dapper because his taste and confidence is super inspiring, and lastly, Alexa Chung because her style is effortlessly elegant.
WYV: Where do you shop? What are your favorite brands/designers?
SS: Being a student, I love shopping at places that offer the best quality for their price. I love the Canadian retailer RW&CO, Joe Fresh, Club Monaco, J.Crew, Perry Ellis and Designer Shoe Warehouse for footwear. For luxury retailers, I love Harry Rosen, which is another fabulous Canadian establishment specifically for men, and designer labels such as Ermengildo Zegna and Michael Bastian.
WYV: How do you wear your voice?
SS: I wear my voice by showcasing that every man can be stylish, regardless of his body type, income and background. On a general note, I never let the clothing define who I am. I am a strong believer of the saying “clothing doesn’t make the man,” as it takes more than just clothing to have style. It takes ambition, confidence, self love and, more importantly, style is an external expression of who the person is within.
WYV: Is there anyone you would like to nominate for a StyleCrush?
SS: I love love love Bianca Venerayan of Kastor and Pollux!
