W. Kamau Bell, the Bay Area comedian and social activist, recently debuted his newest show, United Shades of America. CNN’s United Shades of America explores racism within different American cities, such as the gentrification and erasure of Black communities in Portland, Oregon, and the KKK’s continued activity in the South. Racism comes in many forms, some more subtle than others, and W. Kamau Bell is here to bring them all to the surface.
In the debut episode, W. Kamau Bell meets with the Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. At night. In the dark. On a gravel road. Holy fucking shit! I’m a white person and I’m scared shitless of these animated puddles of hillbilly vomit. Bell, coming in at six-foot-four, bravely towers over the Imperial Jizzard, making him look more like the powerless racist he really is: a man hiding behind a mask of hatred, never showing his actual face. When the Klansman asks Bell if he is proud to be a black man and married to a black woman, Bell smiles and says that he is married to a white woman. When the klansman tells him that it is an abomination of the Bible, Bell jokes:
“On the list of sins, where does interracial marriage come in? There’s like (gestures with his hands) murder; is interracial marriage equal to that?”
Even when standing on a dark, deserted gravel road, face to face with the Imperial fucking Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, W. Kamau Bell still manages to crack a joke. God bless.
W. Kamau Bell manages to bring much-needed perspective to CNN. When your main Black male voice is Don Lemon, there are issues with representation. If you want to check out Bell’s previous work, ALL of “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell” is available on YouTube. There goes my weekend!
