Independence Day, July 4th, whatever you choose to call it… it’s still a Music Monday. Here’s some bangers and ballads to keep you going through your work day, dancing at the grill, or blocking out the uninvited *bangs* and *pows* for those who are coping with PTSD.
We start with Lizzo’s uplifting “Good As Hell.” The plus size beauty sings about having the confidence to leave a toxic relationship, something that every woman who is in the situation desperately needs to hear.
“Boss up and change your life, you can have it all with no sacrifice. I know he did you wrong, but we can make it right. So go ahead and let it all hang out tonight. Cuz he don’t love you anymore, so walk your fine ass out the door.”
Every. Single. Person. Needs. To. Hear. This. Message.
It may not be directed at you, but you can benefit from hearing it. The video is full of BIPOC women celebrating themselves with each other. It’s the body positive, self-affirming song that we all need as we #DropTheTowel this summer.
The biggest name in today’s playlist is the constantly evolving pop chameleon, Rihanna. A confessed lifelong trekkie, her bombastic ballad, “Sledgehammer,” is the biggest tune from the latest of the rebooted Star Trek franchise. Co-written with Sia, this track hits all of the heartstrings as we remember the gone-too-soon Anton Yelchin, the young actor who played “Chekov” in the recent Star Trek films, who was killed recently in a freak accident at the young age of 27.
Another new tune is the beautiful “Augustine” by Blood Orange/Dev Hyne’s long awaited new release, Freetown Sound.
“My album is for everyone told they’re not black enough, too black, too queer, not queer the right way … it’s a clapback,” Hynes told Entertainment Weeklyy.
An outspoken activist for Black Lives, the album comes just days after an officer involved in the killing of Freddie Gray Jr was cleared of all charges. The name pays homage to the hometown of Hynes’ father, the capital of Sierra Leone, Freetown. The album is a must own.
