Music Monday for Body Positivity Week!
Today is the kickoff of our #BodyPositivityWeek here at Wear Your Voice. What better way to really get pumped than to toss on some #musicmonday tunes and move your body?
Dance isn’t about exercise; it’s about moving your body in a way that feels good. Sometimes it’s about self-expression — another vehicle like writing, visual art, or music — and it allows people to express their thoughts and feelings in a way that they otherwise could not. What better way to express your self-acceptance and positive outlook than to have a body positive dance party? We hope that we provide a bit of inspiration with these tunes that were compiled with a little help from our friends.
Body positivity isn’t just about being okay with your waistline and other people’s cellulite. It includes many more issues beyond those. Our Music Monday playlist includes sex positivity, gender dysphoria, gender fluidity, feminist anthems and blunt conversations about racism.
Briki fa President is EVERYTHING. “I don’t care if you’re 100 pounds, 200 pounds, 300 pounds, 400 pounds. If you’re a fat girl, then hold it down. Pick it up and drop it down.” Briki, Nenene, and the rest of their crew are 100 percent unapologetically fat, happy in their own skin and cheerleaders for other fat-bodied folks. They call out the “pretty for a fat girl” trope and other problematic bullshit.
Tokyo Vanity covers body positivity, sex positivity and the sisterhood of best friends with “Best Friend.” Happy dark-skinned women playing around, wearing tutus, loving their bodies, having fun and supporting each other is the ongoing theme in this video and it’s amazing. Tokyo Vanity’s hair is unbelievable, too — total style inspiration.
Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! discusses gender dysphoria and other transfemme issues in her work. LJG is the embodiment of punk — saying fuck the establishment and society’s rules and expectations. She is someone to admire as she lives so authentically. No one can take that from her, and we hope that you will not let anyone dare take it from you, either.
Body positivity is for all bodies, all genders. Let’s celebrate together as we kick off Wear Your Voice’s Body Positivity Week with a loud bang and heartfelt celebration.
