Look Fabulous With a Little Makeup & a Little Time

No makeup.

No makeup.

I am a recent makeup convert. Throughout college, I prided myself on my feminism and low-maintenance style, and I thought that meant makeup was a no-no. Lo and behold, it turns out feminism is personal and fluid, and wearing makeup does not negate your feminism. Now that I’ve embraced makeup, I’m having a blast experimenting with different routines and products. I don’t always have the time or desire for a fully painted face, so I’ve developed several routines that take varying amounts of time. Each routine builds on the makeup from the previous one. If you’ve got 10 seconds to 10 minutes, follow these tips to look fabulous.

10 Seconds: Just Lipstick

Best Occasions: Running errands or you overslept.

Routine: Put on lipstick. Boom, routine done.

Products: NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Morocco, $5.99 at Ulta

Lipstick & undereye concealer.

Lipstick & undereye concealer.

1-2 Minutes: Lipstick & undereye concealer/powder

Best Occasions: Meeting a friend for lunch, going to work.

Routine: I have purple undereye circles. They’ve been there since I was a child. Over the years I’ve been asked many a time if I was tired when I was in fact well-rested. I’ve even been asked if I have a black eye. Nope, just bad genes. So if I only have a minute, the best thing I can do to look more presentable is cover those ugly purple circles. I instantly look brighter, more awake and less like I got punched in the face. Put on concealer in a rounded triangle shape under eyes and rub in with your ring finger. Then use your ring finger to pat on setting powder to avoid creasing.

Lipstick, undereye concealer, liquid liner & mascara.

4-5 Minutes: Lipstick, undereye concealer/powder, liquid liner & mascara

Best Occasions: This is my go-to routine for date night, Wear Your Voice meetings and good old daily fabulousness.

Routine: Now that you’ve got lipstick and your underye circles concealed, it’s time to jazz up your eyes. Winged liquid liner and high-quality mascara make my small brown eyes pop. Shake up the liquid liner and pull your eyelid taut while you draw on liner right above the lash line. Add a wing tip by starting away from each eye and quickly pulling the brush inwards to meet the line you drew. Coat your lashes in mascara from lid to tip, taking your time to accentuate and separate each lash. I recommend high-quality brands like Urban Decay and Benefit because they’re waterproof, non-irritating and they last all night… and sometimes even into the next morning.

Products: Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Revolver, $19 at Sephora; Benefit They’re Real! Mascara, $23 at Sephora

Lipstick, undereye concealer, liquid liner & mascara and BB cream.

Lipstick, undereye concealer, liquid liner & mascara and BB cream.

5 Minutes: Lipstick, undereye concealer & powder, liquid liner, mascara & BB Cream

Best Occasions: If you’re going to be out in the sun or you’re feeling splotchy.

Routines: A friend introduced me to BB cream last year and it changed my life. BB Cream, which stands for “Beauty Balm” is a foundation, moisturizer and sunscreen in one. I like how it softens my wrinkles and evens out my skin tone without completely covering my cute freckles. It’s also lighter than foundation and not cakey or sticky. The Ulta BB Cream I use has a subtle shimmer that adds a nice glow. Squirt some onto your finger then dab onto forehead, cheeks, chin, nose and blend with your fingers until all rubbed in.

Products: Ulta BB Cream SPF 20, $12.50 at Ulta

Lipstick, undereye concealer, liquid liner & mascara, blemish concealer/powder & bronzer.

Lipstick, undereye concealer, liquid liner & mascara, blemish concealer/powder & bronzer.

10 Minutes: Lipstick, undereye concealer & powder, liquid liner, mascara, BB Cream, bronzer or blush, plus whatever else you wish.

Best Occasions: Extra special occasions like auditions and fancy date nights.

Routine: Ten minutes is about all I can ever spend on makeup. I like fabulousness but I love efficiency. This is my all-out makeup routine for the most special occasions. Or the rare days when I’m bored and have time on my hands. After completing my 5 minute routine, I’ll take my concealer stick and carefully cover zits, blemishes, red marks and discolorations, then dab setting powder on top to keep the concealer in place. Then I sweep bronzer over my cheeks to define and accentuate my cheekbones, then on my forehead, nose, chin and jawline for color and contouring. Sometimes I use blush instead. Don’t overdo it. This is also the time to throw on whatever else you want: maybe define your eyebrows with a brow pencil, add shimmery eyeshadow, whatever you want. This is the time to go all out and have fun.
