Her Resilience Unveiling Ceremony This Saturday, 3/21 



This Saturday (21st) head to Park Community Garden ( at the corner of Park Blvd. and Cleveland Street) for the Her Resilience Part I: Mural Unveiling & Ceremony presented byMamacitas Cafe and Her Resilience: A Mural for Women Affected by Violence in Oakland.  Her Resilience, a collaboration of amazing local women ( Hazel Street, Elizabeth Welsh, Gabrielle Rae Travis, Nicole Gervacio, and Monica Santos), is a mural intended to honor, celebrate and commemorate the lives of women affected by violence in the city of Oakland, California. The event will feature Mona Webb as Emcee, Nuri Nusrat & Robert Castro  and offer face painting, healing circles, opening ceremony and food provided by– Tamales La Oaxaqueña and Mamacitas Cafe.

NerdWallet Lists Oakland as One of Best U.S Cities For Working Women in 2015

In a recent Forbes article, Oakland was listed number 8 out of a list of top 10 cities for working women in 2015. Women’s median earnings as share of men’s: in Oakland is 101%, rent as share of women’s median earnings is  25% and female unemployment is a low 4.4% . The findings come from financial literacy site NerdWallet.


An App That Alerts Your Phone When You Pass By Places Where Women Made History

A few weeks old, but I just found out about it this week. SPARK, a grassroots organization aimed at creating awareness on the sexualization of young girls around the world created this awesome new app that alerts you when you walk past places  where women have made history. SPARK collaborated with Google after discovering their daily doodles only featured women 17% of the time. Together, the Field Trip app was born.


Becky Hammon leads the Spurs to Victory

This week, the first woman to be an assistant coach/coach in the NBA led her team, the San Antonio Spurs into victory during a game against the Knicks Tuesday night, winning 104-100 in overtime. Speaking with the New York Post, Hammon said of the victory “I think you’ll see more of it in the future.”

 Vice President Biden Pledges 41 Million to Clear Rape Kit Backlog

On Monday, Vice President Joe Biden Today, spoke in Maryland to discuss the Administration’s new Sexual Assault Kit Initiative , an effort to help communities accelerate testing of the estimated 400,000 rape kits that have been backlogged in law enforcement storage rooms and crime labs across the country.

Women of color make up just 0.4 of CEOs at S&P 500 companies.

Catalyst, a nonprofit organization working towards building equity in the workplace and providing more visibility for women in leadership published this week statistics that show women of color make up just 0.4% of leadership roles at top companies in corporate America. “We’ll never achieve a truly inclusive workplace as long as women of color continue to face obstacles to leadership,” says Deborah Gillis, President and CEO, Catalyst. “These data suggest that women of color are least likely to benefit from corporate diversity programs.
