Remember this cute kid who was making the social media rounds last month?
Recently I starting realizing a trend I was seeing between two of my favorite and less salacious F words: food and fashion (appropriately dubbed: fatshion). Fatshion is more than just a beautiful visual display of creative self-expression, but a revolutionary wearing of voices who are often told they don’t deserve to speak. Yes it’s true that the act of putting illustrations or pictures of food on clothing isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, but when you utilize the two together specifically for fat bodies, it definitely becomes a bold statement. If you’re wondering why, I’ll direct you no further to one of my latest labor’s of love, “Ultimate Guide to Understanding Fat Phobia,” and simply state here that a fat womyn wearing her voice and unapologetically celebrating her love of food, in a society that has demonized it so far as to fooling everyone into thinking not eating is a viable life choice (when in reality it’s a death sentence), is truly a powerful self-love statement of solidarity with ones own body and adhering to WYV’s belief that everyone should wear whatever the EFF they want! With all this deliciousness in mind, I can already feel my tummy grumbling…Bring on the delights that even use gluten-free foodies can enjoy! The following represent the most recent favorite foodie fatshion finds of mine – a true feast for the eyes!
1. French Fry Feels!
This look is giving me a serious In n’ Out craving – now, french fry crop top by Chubby Cartwheels is next-up on my wish list. I especially love how Keena styles this look with her own charming burger headpiece – which I am also craving now (made for her by a friend inspired by this HappyMills Etsy shop, which now has a neapolitan ice cream sandwich hair bow)! It is no surprise to me that this goddess rocks her looks so well, especially since she is an amazing Burlesque performer whose every move exudes confidence and self-love! I think the only thing that could better complete this look would be a pair of milkshake earrings – if they don’t exist we will have to change that very soon!
2. Darling Donut Divas!
Words can barely express my love for this Donut crop top, also by the amazing Shawna Farmer of Chubby Cartwheels, which can be seen on Laurel below in this whimsically campy scene by one of my absolutely favorite photographers: Suma Jane Dark. I don’t know exactly what’s going on here, but I know I want to be a part of it!
Model Brittany Hudson is seen below rocking the same amazing donut crop top, but this time as a mini skirt! She seriously put her thing down flipped it and reversed it on this ensemble for an act of purely innovative fatshion-meets-photography genius! (K.I.T. with Suma on Instagram @itsrainingneon)
3. Winning With Watermelon!
Recently fashion house Rue 107 released their summer collection of juicy bikinis, crop tops, skirts, and jumpsuits – watermelon inspired of course! There is such a strong association for many of us with biting into a slice of watermelon in summertime and feeling the cold sweetness slide off our lips – and now this sensuality has been applied to the fashion world as well! Not just satiating to the senses but thirst quenching too!
4. You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream…Attire!
Rue 107 didn’t just stop at one sweet summertime treat, they went all in with these twirled ice cream cones that also look heavenly. In my opinion any BODY can adorn his, her, or themselves in foodie fashions such as these!
Of course I had to include one of WYV’s favorite fat activists, Virgie Tovar – we’d even let her cut us in line at the dairy bar, because we know she’d make us fall in love with her all over again for it anyway! I mean I think I almost passed out when I saw her OWNING this ice cream jumpsuit…the fact that she also got the bikini to match was just the cherry on top – and whipped cream and sprinkles!
*Bonus: Foodie Accessories*
Virgie also recently highlighted an amazing foodie find while traveling – pizza, and hot dogs, and burgers, oh fry!
5. Pink Pineapple Princess!
I am thoroughly in love with everything that the illustrious Amina Mucciolo of Stuido Mucci creates in her fantastical worlds of wonder, which often include nods to favorite foods (think: pepperoni pizza slice ballon and sprinkled donut bean bag chair). This image highlights her own whimsical and wondrous fashion sense – featuring here a quirky pineapple pattern (and color comb0) that I can’t get enough of at the moment.
6. Reppin’ Rolls!
T-shirt designer Feminine Funk definitely ups the anti with this cheeky take on a love of fat rolls and sushi rolls. If you haven’t noticed I’m a huge fan of literally wearing my voice on my shirts, especially when they make self-loving statements such as this!
7. Turn These Men’s” Sweatshirts into your Femme Crop Top Dreams!
These foodie delights are my own find from a random Instagram account I stumbled upon in my quest for this fashion buffet (no, I will not waver with my love of food puns; they are almost as strong as my love of food fashion!); @fashion.sweater. They claim to be “for men,” but I’m already calling it quits on that lame gender norming (why don’t companies understand that opening their gender conceptions could mean doubling their sales!?), and suggesting that we look at them with a creative eye – and some serious scissors in hand! I’m thinking crop tops, mini skirts, head accessories, and perhaps arm or ankle warmers for these gems – their are many DIY ideas floating around online, but I appreciated this no-sew hacks Buzzfeed article.
Big Thanks to all of the inspiring creative souls included in this article! If you haven’t already leapt from your computer or device screen for a snack, please take a moment to share some of your favorite foodie fashions are below, or what your ultimate fantasy ensemble would look like if you could create one!
