Gone are the days of being excited to stay home on a Friday night to tune into T.G.I.F. on ABC for Family Matters, Boy Meets World, and Step By Step, or staying glued to the TV on Saturday nights for SNICK on Nickelodeon. But one thing’s for sure: the ’90s are back.

90’s Fashion Revival: A Hater’s Guide

From TV show revival/spin-offs like Girl Meets World (I will never forgive them for splitting Shawn and Angela up. #SHAWNGELA #NEVERFORGET) and the upcoming Full House spin-off Fuller House, right down to ready to wear fashion, the ’90s don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. I’ve been saying that for the past two years as Doc Martens and baby doll dresses have been popping up, but as of now I’m really feelin’ it because it’s so in-your-face. Shopping at the mall now feels like a complete flashback to elementary school as I spy plaid flannels, baby doll dresses, tan workman’s boots, chokers, and mini backpacks in nearly every store. Wet Seal even has a few Clueless-inspired pieces.

I thought it would be fun to take a take a step back in time and take a look at some of the coolest fictional Betty’s from the ’90s. Sure, the fashion of the ’90s was pretty garish (let’s be honest), but if we look past a few things, there are definitely some looks we can pull inspiration from to incorporate into our everyday ensembles today!

1. Denim Jacket with a Graphic Print Dress

Kelly Kapowski was the “It Girl” on Saved by the Bell, but let’s be real. Lisa Turtle was the true fashionista of Bayside High. Grab her style with a graphic print dress and pair it with a denim jacket (or vest) and some cute boots. The look is totally perfect for Fall! Well… at least in California, anyway.

2. Anything and Everything Plaid

Dresses, skirts, shirts, and the ever popular button-up flannel — plaid is all over the damn place this season. Even Target decorated its ceilings with it! Take some inspo from the ladies of Clueless‘ iconic plaid blazer and mini skirt ensembles into your own wardrobe.

3. Floral Prints

Topanga Lawrence from Boy Meets World was the coolest ethereal teen around. Sport her look by pairing floral aline skirts with some sweet lace details and boots. Always with the boots!

4. Cozy Novelty Sweaters

Cozy sweaters are my absolute favorite cold weather item! Look up to Laura Winslow, the love of Steve Urkel’s life, from Family Matters by pairing them with some skinny jeans and ballet flats. Your sweater doesn’t need to be completely over the top like the one she’s wearing, but where’s the fun in a plain one?

5. Embellished Anything

The Pink Ranger is basically the Kelly Kapowski of The Might Morphin’ Power Rangers, but let’s take a minute to appreciate Trini, the O.G. Yellow Ranger, and her funky embellished vest. Embellished items like this vest or even a purse would be a great addition to your Fall wardrobe. You can pair a vest like this with a long sleeved plain top or dress.

6. Mixing Patterns

Clarissa Darling from Clarissa Explains it All is arguably the ultimate ’90s fashionista. You can find all kinds of inspiration from this girl! Seriously, just Google Clarissa Explains it All fashion. But let’s focus on her knack of mixing patterns. Rather than mixing polkadots with paisleys, make it more modern polkadots and florals, or stripes with complimentary colors.

7. Layered Necklaces

Claudia Kishi from The Baby Sitter’s Club is my giiiirrrlll! She’s super into art, fashion, and is horrible at math and science just like me. No duh why she was my fave. This Fall, layer on some necklaces together like she did in The Baby Sitter’s Club movie.

8. Opaque Nylons

Kimmy Gibbler, DJ Tanner’s BFF from Full House, isn’t necessarily a fashionista, but the opaque tights look she’s rockin’ is still relevant to Fall fashion today. Opaque tights in different colors help add some oomph to any outfit, keeps legs relatively warm (especially if they’re lined with fleece!) and mask hairy legs that we don’t feel like shaving. Or don’t shave because you don’t believe in shaving to begin with… or something like that, whatever.

9. Classic Black Leather Jacket

I probably shouldn’t have been watching The Craft since I was only 10 when it came out, but damn those girls were wickedly awesome in their black leather jackets and school girl uniforms. If you look watch the film, their style is still on point. Incorporate a classic black leather jacker, particularly a motorcycle styled one, into your Fall look this season and channel your inner Bonnie (or Nancy, whoever was your fave).

10. Fun Bowler Hats and Matching Blazers

Fall weather also means it’s time to bust out your favorite hat! Hats are especially great for those lazy days when you don’t feel like fixing your hair. Hilary Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was always on point when it came to styling her hats, especially since she always managed to color coordinate it with a fun blazer. Make it more 2015 and less ’90s by taking it down a few notches and grab a smaller/medium sized bowler hat and pair it with a colorful blazer (sans shoulder pads, obviously).
