Japanese Plus-Size Model Naomi Watanabe Takes Over the Internet
When you think of Japan, you may not think of plus-sized women. Actress, comedian and fashion designer Naomi Watanabe is helping re-shape the image of femininity one curve (and laugh) at a time. Watanabe has been cited as a major inspiration for the Japanese pocchari (chubby) trend, which is paving the way for other folks such as la BIG 3 and the Shangrila maid cafe.
Watanabe became famous not just for her talent, but also her weight. She said “no” to diets after several failures, and embraced her natural body size. Now she’s a body-positive spokeswoman and cover girl for bigger women’s fashion magazine la Farfa. She has also created her own plus-size label, PUNYUS.
