Astrology for Feminists: Week of December 18-25
The big news this week is that Mercury goes retrograde on Monday December 19, and it will stay retrograde until after the new year — January 8. This Mercury retrograde in Capricorn will also be conjunct Pluto, which will take us much deeper into the retrograde than typical communication issues (like failed messages, disrupted travel plans and glitchy tech issues, although those will still be in play as well). This Mercury retrograde has some deep places to take us if we are willing to be brave and peel back the layers. Read below to see how it will affect your sign.
As for the holidays, we will have waning Moon in Scorpio, which may feel a bit itchy, uncomfortable and not quite as “cozy” as we would like a holiday to feel. Make sure you are prioritizing self-care above friends, family and the holiday rush. If you can limit your activities this holiday, it could be in your favor. This would be a great time to stay home and chill with loved ones, providing that you’ve taken care of yourself to the point of being able to handle others.
Aries: Mercury is going retrograde in the part of your chart that rules your career and public standing. If you’ve been job hunting or working on a big project, you may want to anticipate slow — or even backward — movement in the next few weeks. Don’t worry, though — this period is here to reveal some deep feelings and ideas that need to be brought to the surface in regard to your career and public image. It may feel like a setback now, but the planetary forces are trying to guide you to really dig deep into what you want and need before settling on something. You can best work with this planetary energy by taking time out to reflect around your job, career and status. What do you want? What do you need? How can you prioritize and strategize to make those things happen?
Taurus: This Mercury retro will be hitting your house of higher learning and travel, so if you are traveling this holiday season — especially long distances, with complicated flights, hotel reservations and luggage handling — you may want to double-check all plans, keep a precise calendar and carry on your luggage to avoid problems, issues or delays. Alternately if you are staying close to home this week, you may want to dig super deep into some old travel ideas that you’ve been wanting or needing back in your life. Hankering to revisit a certain place? You may not want to solidify those plans/buy tickets this week, but you certainly could do some soul-searching around them. This would also be a fab week to reread books that you love or haven’t read in a while. You could also use this time to study for exams or classes you’ve failed in the past, as you may have a better time tackling the material now.
Gemini: Things might get pretty weird this week and the next few, and that’s OK. This retrograde is hitting the part of your chart that rules transformation, and your dealings with when, how and why you transform. You could anticipate some very big endings if you’ve been feeling like things may need to come to a close. You could also prepare yourself for old debts to resurface in a big way. Have a medical or other bill from years ago you forgot about? It may come in the mail soon. Instead of fearing the bills or changes, you can embrace them knowing that you will feel better after you deal with them. Or, if things like a relationship, career or something else need to end, it will only benefit you in the long run. The more you embrace change this week and next, the better you will feel in 3 to 6 months from now. Just meditate deeply on what you really need and want before proceeding. If you are literally freaking about your debt, calm down and strategize. How do you pay things off in a way that calls abundance into your life?
Cancer: This Mercury retrograde, you very well may anticipate a familiar person from your past will resurface in some weird or deep way. This could be an old lover, family member or BFF. It may be time to confront old toxic patterns, situations or relationships that you’ve outgrown or that need to be reworked to be healthy and stable. You may have to stand tall and firm, keeping boundaries up, and negotiate through conflict transformation this week and next. You also could just be confronted with negative feelings such as, “I can’t believe I let this person in my life,” or “I can’t believe we were together.” I would recommend using those feelings as an opportunity to congratulate yourself for how far you’ve come and what you’ve accomplished — not to beat yourself up. No matter what happens this week, Cancer, make sure you have someone you can reach out to. Therapist, friend, confidante. Self-nurture and self-care, and DON’T let yourself get frazzled. Love yourself first and it will all work out.
Leo: This is going to be a great week for you to do some deep soul mining for yourself around how you eat, move and live your daily life. You might discover deep rooted-issues that are keeping you stuck in negative patterns that need to be removed. Blocks around how and when you feed yourself, your feelings around that, how and when you move and if you are choosing to get enough nature into your life. You may need to revisit how you spend your mornings: are you rushing off to work or school, or are you taking your time, making a tea, sitting with yourself and your intentions or even doing a card pull or journal entry beforehand? What do you want and need to feel good, moment to moment, in your day? This is also a great time to reorganize your living space to be more conducive to your flow, happiness and health. This would be a great period to go through clutter and toss what is no longer bringing you joy!
Virgo: This holiday season, you may find extra challenges around having “fun” like you normally do. It may be harder to create or find inspiration, but you should remember that it’s all part of a larger process. Parenting may be extra difficult, so if you take care of little ones, make sure you’re getting time in for yourself to relax and rejuvenate — even if it’s only for five minutes. You may need to really strategize around self-care and self-nurturing this week and and next, even if you don’t have kids. You may have to put more emphasis and effort into feeling good for yourself, especially shoring up personal resources. Boundaries will also be important on the romantic front, as old lovers may appear this season, and you may need to stand extra firm and strong before engaging, and ask yourself “is this really worth my time?” “Is it good for me?”
Libra: This week and next may be radical and full of realizations around home, family and ancestral roots for you. You can use it to break the code of your ancestral lineage in a way and create a deeper and stronger connection with those parts of yourself, and those ancestors. This would be a great time to call out to your ancestors, create an altar for them and communicate through song, prayer, meditation or vision. Revisit your Akashic records if you can, or with a practitioner, and see what beautiful secrets and lessons await you in your heritage. You may also benefit right now from creating a plan around redoing your home. Do you have unneccesary items piling up in your space? Is dust settling on your personal items? Do you need to clean and redo your space to be more conducive to flow? Now would be the perfect time to do so, Libra. Break tasks up into small, doable chunks and reward yourself for each accomplishment.
Scorpio: You may feel this Mercury retrograde more like a traditional Mercury retrograde than the other signs: you may want to really double-check all your travel plans, notes, calendar and reservations — and travel only with carry-on luggage if you can. Simplifying your travel plans will mean minimizing mistakes, and you may want to review all your plans and ask yourself about your priorities before moving completely forward. I would highly suggest upping the self-care ante and keeping a cool head as well. You’ll also want to make sure you’re not super short or curt with people for the next few weeks. You might be extra abrupt and even unkind without even realizing it, so keeping yourself happy will aid in keeping those around you happy, too. Don’t get overwhelmed, just remember to triple-check your plans, resources and strategies and you will be just fine.
Sagittarius: This Mercury retrograde could take you deeper into an understanding of your possessions and how you make money. You might have some strong thoughts, ideas or realizations around how you make money and what is important for you. Is what you’re doing in alignment with your core values? Maybe it’s time to rethink how you think about money and your attitude in regard to abundance as well. From readily accepting compliments to money and gifts, these are things that speak about your ability to manifest what makes you happy in your life. Old hangups over money and possessions may come up for healing now, but I recommend you allow those signals to come through and teach you the lessons you deserve to feel and heal, so you can begin working with money and possessions in a way that truly makes you happy.
Capricorn: You may feel like words are coming out weird or odd this week and next, and you may have to take extra care around your communications with folks, especially those you really care about. You may feel challenged to express yourself the way you’d like, and I advise taking it really easy around relatives who have the potential to make you angry or hurt. You may want to opt out of conversations or even whole events, especially if they are triggering or if there are going to be microaggressions involved. With this transit of Mercury retrograde conjunct Pluto in your first house of self, you may feel like your personal boat is rocked a bit and your words may not flow as well as you’d like them to. Do what makes you feel good, Capricorn, and if you need to take extra time this week and next to do that, than you should — without feeling guilty.
Aquarius: This Mercury retrograde would be a fantastic time to tap into your inner witch and get seriously woo-woo with your life, especially if you’ve been feeling that pull for some time now (or maybe all your life). This is a great time to start or deepen a personal practice involving the metaphysical, and would be a powerful time to not just practice, but to realign your core and spiritual values. I would encourage you to check in with yourself around what you believe spiritually, what forces you feel are in your life and how to best work with them. You have the ability to repaint your spiritual structures right now! You may feel extra spacy as well, so be prepared to deal with the real world when you have to — just bring your unique twist and vision to it! You have an incredible gift of healing just by talking and shining, Aquarius. We all need that, in these times more than ever.
Pisces: This is going to be a perfect time to catch up with old friends, especially if you are returning to your home of origin for the holidays. You can really use the energy to put your best foot forward with long-ago friends and community members. You may feel extra fantastic and a little bit like flaunting, and that’s OK. Just remember to be careful with your communications, especially folks in your closer circles. Mercury retrograde can bring about misunderstandings, and you want to be cognizant of your part in the drama if it happens — and hopefully minimize it if you can. With Pluto conjunct Mercury, you could have some deep thoughts regarding why your friends are your friends, how you chose them and what that may signal to other parts of your self and psyche. If your friends rock and you love them, can you use the “how you got there” in other parts of your life? Especially the parts that may be more challenging?
