While aesthetically different, all three companies are run by woman-identified entrepreneurs who strive to place body positivity at the forefront of their brand and business practices. While it may sound simple, they are creating their own body-positive revolution within a body-hostile industry. From the UK to California, these companies are bringing feminine lingerie to bodies across the world.
Mymilla is a UK-based company specializing in bra cup sizes D to K. Nicole Kanjere, owner and CEO of Mymilla, was inspired to start the company because of her own needs as a woman with a UK-size HH cup. She was forced to fit into bras that simply could not contain and support her body — or to shell out upwards of $100 to find bras that would work. Stuck between money and discomfort (and sometimes even actual pain), Kanjere decided that she had to do something for herself and other busty folks.
Mymilla has a strict no retouching policy, as well — what you see is what you get, so to speak. They show stretch marks, cellulite, scars or acne and just simply embrace each body as it is. The platform is designed to make buyers feel comfortable and inspired to love the skin they are in.
“We want to change the perceptions of the lingerie industry, to ensure advertising everywhere showcases a variety of beautiful shapes and sizes without negative labels and we do this just by simply being body positive,” Kanjere says.
Curvy Girl Lingerie
Curvy Girl is set to take over the world. With a television show, pieces within several books, a brick-and-mortar shop and a thriving online businesss, Chrystal Bourgon knows how to hustle while keeping customers engaged and wanting more. Currently, San Jose, California-based Curvy Girl is the only physical plus-size lingerie retail boutique in the country.
“I think I’m one of the lucky ones; I was raised in an environment with a lot of unconditional love. I think that’s where my fierce fatty personality comes from,” explains owner Bourgon. “But this store isn’t about me, it’s about all of my customers. It’s about all of those women in Idaho or in London who are just buying what the media is selling. When I can convince them to stop buying that message — [and show them] that they get to feel beautiful and sexy too — that’s what it’s all about. That’s why I do what I do.”

Babydoll Beauty Couture is glam to the max. Owned by singer and entrepreneur Jamie Lopez, BBC has been growing since 2013. Based in Los Angeles, Lopez and BBC also offer salon services in their space. While Babydoll’s ads are visibly retouched, Lopez offers her own brand of super-glamorous, fairy tale-like body-positive images. BBC especially caters to larger plus sizes and SSBBW, a niche often ignored and given little opportunity to feel beautiful and glamourous at the level that Lopez and associates offer.
“Everyone deserves to be beautiful and confident,” Lopez says when asked why she created Babydoll Beauty Couture. “I was tired of being discriminated against as a plus-size woman over 400 pounds. I had some really bad experiences in the beauty industry that made me want to create a positive environment were all women can feel comfortable getting glam, so I spared no expense. It is a dream of mine to create equal opportunities for all women and I strive for big-girl global domination. I decided to take a stand for us! Plus-size women should have the same access to beautiful lingerie and high-end couture that smaller women have.”
