Daily Share: Progress? Polarizing Ashley Graham Stars in Joe Jonas’ ‘Toothbrush’ Video

The purity rings are off and this time, size-16 Sports Illustrated cover girl Ashley Graham is in Joe Jonas’ crosshairs. The internet is losing its collective shit over it, as the internet will do.

Graham, who has a love/hate relationship with being identified as plus size, has been at the epicenter of internet hoopla for a while now. She describes herself as size “curvy, sexylicious” — her problematic words, not ours. As the fashion world cycles through another phase of faux body positivity, Graham has become one of its “it” models.

But she is infamous among body positive and fat liberation activists for saying the term “plus size” is “outdated” and needs to be thrown out, suggesting (in a rather ableist statement that oozed with internalized fatphobia) that it does not matter if you are a “size 2, 12 or 22” as long as you “get off the couch and move your body.” Because we need someone else telling us how to be a “good fatty” versus a “bad fatty.”

Ashley Graham laughs at haters on either side of the body positive movement all the way to the bank.

It’s not clear whether the Jonas brother really digs thicker girls or if they are just the latest trendy prop for his DNCE project. His video for “Cake by The Ocean” featured another “fat-in-the-right-places” hourglass-shaped plus-size model on a winning team of women who pummel a fat man in a cake-fighting contest.

DNCE’s new video is for the song “Toothbrush.” With deep lyrics like:

“Baby you don’t have to rush
You can leave a toothbrush
At my place
At my place
We don’t need to keep it hush
You can leave a toothbrush
At my place
At my place”

Say goodbye to these! SPRING BREAK!

Sorry, Joe.  The “toothbrush” she told you she was running off to get is really her “dignity,” which she left along with her debit card at the last bar she visited.  It’s okay, Music Video Ashley. We get it. So many of us have done the walk of shame, though we prefer the more empowered, pro-sex slut strut or victory lap. Real Life Ashley is probably counting dollars as we speak and gives zero fucks about the entire thing.
