The Bad Hombre and Nasty Woman Are A Tasty Treat
This election cycle has been tough to swallow, but The Bad Hombre and Nasty Woman are here to make it a little easier.
Mother Jones magazine decided to help take the edge off by curating some pretty serious cocktails for this Election Day with their new food politics podcast, Bite, with a mind to represent BIPOC-owned businesses, the dearth of feminine knowledge and excellence within the bartending industry
More than just pretty faces, women are driving forces behind brilliant, nuanced cocktails just as often as their male counterparts, but rarely recognized and praised in the way the men in the industry are. These cocktails do double-time with regards to representation, both in name and the ethical sourcing of ingredients.
Created by San Francisco’s Foreign Cinema and Laszlo’s Nicky Beyries, the Bad Hombre and Nasty Woman cocktails are composed of spirits made by women and people of color, specifically Square One vodka and Ilegal mezcal.
Beyries made sure to avoid cliches like the ubiquitous cosmopolitan, further made a cliche by Sex and the City devotees in the early ’00s. “I get really tired as a female bartender who faces a lot of sexism—not only from guests, but from the industry and from liquor companies themselves—of the idea that for it to be womanly it has to be a certain way or a certain color,” Beyries tells Mother Jones. “There’s nothing more feminine about something because it’s dyed pink.”
For the Bad Hombre cocktail, Beyries opts for a mole-inspired beverage made smoky and complex by mezcal, vermouth, and both chocolate and chili bitters, garnished with chili and cinnamon.
The Nasty Woman is a more nuanced take on the vodka collins, using Thai basil’s complex anisette quality instead of just plain mint. Paired with basil vodka, fresh lemon juice, and high-end lemon soda, this cocktail gets a giant YUM from us! The combination of citrus, herb, and fizz make it light and refreshing without being overwhelmingly fruity.
