Daily Share: Anonymous Twitter User Recounts Gang Rape at Spelman College
[Content warning: sexual assault]
An anonymous Twitter account offers a very detailed report of a gang rape that allegedly occurred this year at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.
“I was drunk but that doesn’t mean I forgot about what happened. I went to the bathroom upstairs to throw up and when I opened the door I was …surrounded by 4 Morehouse students who took me to another room and took turns raping me.”
The anonymous Spelman freshman’s attackers were reportedly upperclassmen from Morehouse College. Morehouse is Spelman’s all-male counterpart, also a liberal arts college, located nearby. Both colleges are historically black and have produced many brilliant minds integral to American history and culture, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., and Alice Walker.
@RapedAtSpelman goes on to explain that she went to file a report with the dean and public safety office after she was raped. However, it took the school a month to contact her regarding the assault.
The dean told reportedly her that Spelman and Morehouse were “brother & sister so I should give them a pass.”
“I don’t want to be at a school that does not make me feel safe and wants to silence me,” @RapedAtSpelman tweets. “Spelman has taught me to be a free thinking woman and also to be a woman who has to keep her mouth closed to protect her ‘brothers.'”
College officials have reached out to the account. The president of the women’s college urged the victim to out herself, saying, “our hearts go out to you … Please identify yourself to me, so that I may offer you my full support and assistance.”
Spelman President Mary Schmidt Campbell adds: “I know that members of our Spelman community join me in expressing heartbreak and outrage over the incidents and experiences recounted on Twitter.” This is contrary to what the @RapedAtSpelman account reports regarding her experience with officials.
According to NBC News, the president of Morehouse reports that the school’s Office of Campus Safety has been “activated” to fully investigate the claims “with the limited information” available.
“Sexual assault is a heinous form of violence and it is a stark contradiction to Morehouse College at its best,” John Silvanus Wilson Jr. said in a statement. “The information anonymously shared on Twitter was our very first indication of this incident. Now that we are aware of these allegations, we are determined to pursue the investigation to the fullest extent possible.”
