shape·shift·er

ˈSHāpˌSHiftər/
noun
(chiefly in fiction) a person or being with the ability to change their physical form at will.

Self proclaimed shapeshifter and bonafide social changemaker, Oakland native Zakiya Harris has taken what it means to be a a jill of all trades to a whole new level. For Zakiya, conventionality was never in the cards for her.

Receiving a B.A in political science and history from Rutgers University, Zakiya continued on to attend New College of Law in San Francisco before abandoning the traditional route to pursue her dreams.

“Having the courage to walk away and pursue my passions was probably one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.”

It’s also one of the best decisions for Oakland. Zakiya has gone on to impact (no pun intended) The Town through community building at Impact Hub Oakland, cultivating technological development of low income youth of color at Hack The Hood, inspiring youth of color and helping green businesses at Grind for the Green and Earthseed Consulting while continuing her first love of music.

” Singing was something that I feel like chose me rather than I chose it. I chose to go to college and get a job and do what people told me, but music was always tapping on my shoulder and really wouldn’t let me go.”

Zakiya released her first solo album Adventures of a Shapeshifter (v. 1) June 2014 with the help of her band Elephantine. My personal favorite: Music is the Sun.

What Wearing Your Voice means to Zakiya:

“Wear Your Voice means to me being your authentic self. Know who you are. Know your power…your gifts, your faults-know what you’re working on and still be committed to showing up…When we speak our truth, when we Wear Our Voice, it frees and encourages and inspires others to wear theirs as well. We have a responsibility [to Wear Our Voice] because all of us get to show up and bring our gifts to the world in a really powerful way.”
