Miss Iceland

Miss Iceland, Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir.

Most of us can concede that beauty pageants are problematic and outdated. However, they still exist and continue to push Eurocentric beauty standards (even on non-Euro contestants) that are impossible to uphold. Recently, presidential candidate Donald Trump was in the media for his terribly sexist and paternalistic behavior toward a previous Miss Universe in the 1980s, calling her fatphobic names and insulting her ethnicity. Another incident happened at a beauty pageant in Italy, where a voluptuous runner-up was attacked for being a size 14.

Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir, a 20-year-old pageant queen from Reykjavik, Iceland, was told to “stop eating” by Miss Grand International founder and Thai TV presenter Nawat Itsaragrisil. Jónsdóttir is refusing to comply with their ridiculous diet requirements.

Itsaragrisil’s “suggestion” was: “Stop eating breakfast, eat just salad for lunch and drink water every evening until the contest.”Jónsdóttir was told by others that “[Itsaragrisil] is telling you this because he likes you and wants you to do well in this contest.”

The beauty queen had a few suggestions for Itsaragrisil.

The Iceland Monitor quotes the surprised but tactful pageant queen as saying:

“If the owner of the contest really wants me to lose weight and doesn’t like me the way I am, then he doesn’t deserve to have me in the Top 10.

“Yes, my shoulders are a bit broader than the other girls’ but that is because I was a member of the Icelandic national athletics team and I am proud of that.

“Of course, I don’t take these comments to heart, but to do my best then hear this … Personally, I think I’m fine as I am.”

“I no longer have any interest in doing my best in this competition after receiving that message,” she said.

“This is definitely the last contest I shall be taking part in.”

The beauty queen has been a competitive athlete for most of her life. Alongside gymnastics, Jónsdóttir has participated in track and field, as well as pole vaulting.

Originally displeased with the pageant and ready to leave town quickly, the young beauty queen has opted to stay in Las Vegas, Nevada, for a few more days so that she can enjoy the city and good food. Dig in, Jonsdottir. Celebrate the fact that they will be talking about you long after they would a pageant winner, too.
