daily-share-sex-assault-awareness.jpgSexual violence happens to folks of all ages, abilities, and genders. It isn’t just about rape; sexual violence also includes sexual child abuse, molestation, sexual exploitation and sexual harassment. Today, on this Sexual Assault Awareness Month Day of Action, we recognize those victims and let them know that they are not alone.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC):

  • Social inequality can increase risk.
  • This is a gendered form of violence: about one in five women (18.3 percent) and one in 71 men (1.4 percent) in the United States has been raped at some time in their lives (Black et al., 2011).
  • 79 percent of female-identified victims report that they were first raped before age 25.
  • 28 percent of male-identified victims report that they were first raped at age 10 or younger.Violence starts young: (Black et al., 2011)

WYV Recognizes that there are many more genders, even if this particular study does not reflect it.

The Office for Victims of Crimes reports that:

  • One in two transgender individuals is sexually abused or assaulted at some point in their lives.
  • Some reports estimate that the transgender community may experience rates of sexual assault up to 66 percent, often coupled with physical assaults or abuse.
  • 12 percent of transgender youth report being sexually assaulted in K–12 settings by peers or educational staff.
  • 13 percent of African-American transgender people surveyed were sexually assaulted in the workplace.
  • 2 percent of homeless transgender individuals were assaulted while staying in shelters.

These shocking statistics suggest that the majority of transgender folks have been victims of sexual assault at some point in their lives and are dealing with the trauma and aftermath of such assaults.
