Natalie Johnson is the California-based plus-size blogger behind the project Shameless Cr3ature and Instagram’s @hentai.hunny. Johnson began blogging in the animesphere when she was younger, but realized that her true love was with plus-size fashion and travel.

Inspired by cosplay and her time working at Nordstrom as a stylist, Johnson mixes couture with edgy, ’90s-influenced goth, both elements at times softened by a vaguely romantic, bohemian sensibility. Johnson also provides a unique voice in the cosplay community which is often dominated by fatphobia and misogyny.

We’re here for it.

Wear Your Voice: How do you describe your style?

Natalie Johnson: My style is ever-changing, so it’s hard to describe. I guess you could say it’s an edgy look. I get a lot of my inspiration from cosplay and drag. I’ve never been afraid of looking over the top. I spent two years working at Nordstrom as a stylist and it definitely played a huge part in influencing my style today. Although my style is my own, my friends are all very stylish as well. They give great input on what looks good and keep me up to date with current trends.

WYV: What inspired Shameless Cr3eature?

NJ: As a plus-size woman, I started my blog because I noticed the lack of opportunities for plus-size bloggers. The plus-size blogging scene is only just beginning to peak. I want to push the boundaries on how plus-size fashion is viewed.

Growing up as a plus-sized girl, it was hard to feel pretty or accepted. Bullying affected my confidence but after many hurdles and downfalls with my esteem, I decided to be shameless and live my life for me. I’ve always been a big fighter for the body positive movement and want people to feel in love with who they are.

WYV: Have you been part of any other blogging ventures?

NJ: This is actually my first real blog, I had dinky anime blog back in high school but I don’t really think that counts. I try to have my blog cover all aspects of my life, [but] I’ve currently been focusing a lot on clothing. I’ve also covered other aspects of my life like travel, food and beauty. With 2016 coming to an end, I have big plans for my blog. I want to show how exciting and amazing a plus-size girl’s life can be. I feel like most people think we stay at home all day.

WYV: What other projects are you currently involved in, either alone or with someone else?

NJ: I recently finished my first lookbook on YouTube with some very fun plus-size vloggers. It was cool to work with people who inspired me when I first started blogging.

WYV: What can we expect in the future?

NJ: I plan to get a lot more personal. I really want to show everyone who I am. I’ve been working on lots of different projects and I plan to have new content every other day. I really want to venture into the YouTube world. I love creating lookbooks and find them very helpful if you want to see how some clothes wear, considering most plus clothes fit and look so different from online and after editing for the blog.

WYV: How do you blend style with body positivity?

NJ: I think when you own your style and really wear what you want, you promote a confidence and self-love that people are instantly inspired by. Everyone should be able to feel comfortable in their own skin.

WYV: Who are your three top StyleCrushes?

NJ: Rihanna, CL and Vivienne Westwood. They all have such an individual style. I’m always a fan of people whose style matches their personality. I love Vivienne’s distinctive style — I familiarize with her style the most; it’s edgy yet fun. Rihanna constantly inspires me to try new things, especially things I think may seem a little much or over the top. I’ve loved CL since my long ago K-pop days. Her style now is a jaw-dropping street style I can’t get enough of. I catch myself constantly trying to duplicate looks. There are so many bloggers and artist I’m constantly inspired by that are consistently raising the bar in fashion I hope to one day do the same.

WYV: Where do you shop? What are your favorite brands/designers?

NJ: Shopping can be tricky since plus-size clothing is so limited . I feel like I hit gold when I find a online store that sells a XXL. For my main source of clothing I shop at ASOS. I love the brand Alice; they are constantly in my posts. I love Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen … anything that looks like you came out of another world. I love fashion that pushes limits on the idea of what “stylish” means.

WYV: Who would you most love to work with?

NJ: I’m a huge fan of Pat McGrath and it would be a dream to work with her. I’ve had a huge passion for makeup and beauty for as long as I can remember and she has been a constant inspiration. Alice Hawkings and Tony Kelly would be two photographers I would die to work with. They have such a distinct style that I’d love to see with someone my size.

WYV: Which designers/brands are you dying to see be more size-inclusive?

NJ: Gypsy Warrior, Are You Ami, Dollskill and Discount Universe, just to name a few. I’d love to see these indie stores go plus-size. I’m a huge fan of their aesthetic but their pieces are not accessible to girls my size. I constantly find myself stuck in straight-sized stores, trying to figure out if I can just buy two of the item and sew it together — haha. I’m waiting for plus-size fashion to catch up; I feel like we are always one step behind straight-sized fashion.

NJ: Any skin/hair/beauty tips that you would like to share?

WYV: Oooh … my favorite, I love a good contour. For all the creme contour fans out there, if you are interested in the really expensive oils that help blend your beat, you can get a huge bottle of Kheils day oil as a cheaper alternative. I discovered this secret on accident, experimenting with different oils and I found the Kheils oil works best for me.

WYV: Which fall fashion are you most excited about? What are you building your fall wardrobe around?

NJ: I love, love, love fall, I’m honestly so excited to start wearing scarves and sweaters again. I love to dress preppy in the fall with lots of plaid and button-ups! I’m really excited for fall colors, especially with emeralds coming back in. I also love all the different textures you can play with. I’m looking forward to pony, wool and way more leather!

WYV: What would you tell an insecure, plus-size teen who is navigating bullying and self-loathing?

NJ: I would tell them that these people don’t define you. I spent way too much of my time worrying about how the way I lived affected others. When you let go, and really have no shame in the way you live, it makes you realize how little the opinions of others matter. You need to take your energy and focus it on the people and things that make you happy.

WYV: How do you wear your voice?

NJ: I wear my voice through my attitude, clothing and individuality.
