This week we celebrate Bay area native Malia Anderson of Style By Malia. Anderson is the mastermind behind the successful website and also works as a stylist. The success of her individual brand of style allowed her to quit her day job in corporate America and dive head first into her creative dream job.
With almost 20 years in the industry, Anderson understands the many angles of fashion from production of products to shows, as well as styling big-name clients. Dedicated to the community, she serves on the North Bay Black Chamber of Commerce as Vice President and Legal Aid of Sonoma County — and she’s the secretary of the Association of Image Consultants International’s San Francisco Bay Area Chapter. She also does a significant amount of volunteer work.
Anderson founded the North Bay Women’s Professional Network, a group of female entrepreneurs building a collaborative business network.
Behind the Curtains with Stylist Malia Anderson
Name: Malia Anderson
Location: San Francisco Bay Area/ Wine Country
Blog/Brand: Style by Malia
Wear Your Voice: How do you describe your style? What informs it?
Malia Anderson: My style is always classic and ladylike with a bit of edge and sass. My style is never vulgar but always a bit sexy. My moods and environment inform how I am going to get dressed. I never follow trends; I tend to be anti-trend for the most part.
WYV: What inspired your blog?
MA: Style by Malia has been an idea since before I went to college. I started the blog Style by Malia in 2009 to write Red Carpet Reports, however, I still didn’t know what to do with the brand. When corporate America and I decided to part ways, my hubby encouraged me to follow my dream and run my styling firm full-time.
WYV: Who are your three top StyleCrushes?
MA: Right now, Lupita Nyong’o, because her makeup game challenges me to try new things. Next is Norma of Originalmangu.com: her style pushes me to break out and try newness in a classic way and I love that. Lastly is Tamera Mowry. I love the fun she has with clothing.
WYV: Where do you shop? What are your favorite brands/designers?
MA: I shop everywhere. I love clothes so I am always trying to find something within a brand that speaks to me. I shop Eloquii and Lane Bryant a lot. However, I also shop local boutiques and stores where I live. In terms of brands I love right now, I am crazy about Henri Bendel — they have been getting a lot of my money. Also Rebecca Minkoff. I love her style. Lastly, my closet is overflowing with Taylor dresses.
WYV: How do you wear your voice?
MA: For me, I think I always want people to understand that the fact that I am a strong woman doesn’t stop me from being a lady. I always want people to see me as approachable, but also know not to mess with me. My voice is a combination of strength and femininity.
