This world is not an easy one to navigate. We have to fight so hard for our “wins” every day, only to see the losses mount up seemingly twice as high.

That’s why it’s important to give yourself a small victory every once in a while.

As Ellen Bard points out, everyone’s got a list of things that need to be done. Things in the back of your mind nagging you. When everything else sucks, but you’ve got a little bit of energy, pull it together to accomplish one of those little things.

Need some ideas? Here are a few small projects that you can tackle in an afternoon in order to get that feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that you might need to kickstart your confidence. Maybe after a few of these you’ll feel strong enough to tackle bigger problems that are holding you down.

1. Deep-Clean The Refrigerator.

You can be the most “together” person in the world and still have a messy fridge. Take time to clear out anything beyond its date or things that you absolutely know you are not going to eat. If a jar has been in there for more than six months, the likelihood is strong that it’s been in there for too long or it will have gone bad by the time you finally finish it. Toss it or use it that night in a new recipe.

Take everything out of the refrigerator and clean the racks, drawers and the bottom of the refrigerator with earth-friendly cleaners or simply water, vinegar and elbow grease.

2. Fix Missing Buttons and Broken Jewelry.

While this sounds both old-school and unlikely, think about it. Take a few hours to sew the missing buttons back onto items of clothing. Many of us have a cup of buttons that have come off of shirts, jackets or other pieces of clothing. The same idea goes for broken jewelry you have lying around. Perhaps it’s missing a jump ring, a clamp or an earring hook. Rather than just toss that favorite jacket aside for a million years or lose a perfectly good earring that just needs a simple fix, set aside the time to actually correct the problem. Put on a movie or Skype with a pal while you do it.

You’ll be through your pile of clothing and jewelry in no time. Not only will you be able to cross this off of your to-do list, you will also be able to wear your lovely garments and jewels once again!

3. Deep-Clean Your Tub.

If you are physically able to do it, deep-clean your tub. Let your bathtub and shower be a place of peace and healing, not a place where you spend your time worrying about slipping or catching something funky. If you have the energy, give your tub and shower walls a deep scrub so that when your body and mind are weak, you can relax and use it as a space to feel better.

4. Finish An Art Project That You Abandoned.

If you are a creative person, chances are there are multiple art projects that you have begun, but put down for one reason or another. So many stories, pieces of jewelry, paintings and drawings have been set aside for another day, only to be left behind for months, even years. It’s easy to get distracted, discouraged, or just plain bogged down. However, if you take the time to re-start a project that fell to the wayside, you may discover renewed energy and ideas to complete the piece.

5. Cook Ahead For The Week.

Sometimes a jump-start on the week is exactly what you need in order to be able to balance your workload and self-care. One of the best ways to do this is to cook ahead for the week.

Cooking ahead for the week is easier on the wallet and helps curb the temptation to eat out even when you don’t have the cash. On top of that, it allows you to take full ownership of what you put into your body, regardless of what you choose it to be.
