Tired of hearing about incredibly progressive young starlet Zendaya? Good, neither are we!

This week, the young entrepreneur told Elle that her line of high heel shoes are inspired by the women in her life, but they’re also for “boys.”

The shoes are available at Nordstrom and range from $80 to $110 for twelve styles, including flats, heels and boots, under the name Daya by Zendaya.

“I was very inspired by working women, and also women who aren’t working yet! I want them to have shoes that feel luxurious and special and well-crafted and thought about. But also, they should have shoes that won’t break the bank. You don’t have to spend three years saving up for beautiful shoes,” Zendaya explained to Elle.

“My older sister is a working mom. She’s busy. She chooses to spend money on her children. But she should be able to afford a good shoe for herself. My older niece is a college student. She’s going to start going on job interviews, and she needs a really good pair of shoes. My little nieces haven’t learned how to walk in heels yet, but they will. And they’ll need good ones. But it’s not just for women. Boys will be rocking my heels too, you know what I’m saying?” she said.

This is great news for trans and nonbinary folks — if the sizes extend beyond the usual 10 or 11 ceiling. Even cis-male rockers like Lenny Kravitz and Prince have been known to wear heeled boots and platforms, both onstage and off.

The young star says that she decided to break into fashion with a line of shoes because it was more of a controlled experiment. Many other stars, such as Jessica Simpson, the Olsen Twins and Victoria Beckham, have clothing lines and have had to wade through options of tops, skirts, pants, denim, dresses, leggings … you name it. Zendaya was well-advised by creative partner and stylist Law Roach, who has also worked with folks like Celine Dion, Brandy and Monica.

She describes her partnership as “supporting each other 120 percent,” saying, “You know you’re in a good creative partnership when their success makes you as happy, or sometimes happier, than your own accolades.”

With a mid-range price point, Zendaya purposefully keeps the shoes accessible — but still covetable.

“These shoes are inspired by real people. And they deserve quality.”
