“Mary Weather is a state of mind”

Mary Weather features hand silk screened pieces

and is located on 15th street in downtown Oakland. Her prints range from peace signs on navy blue tanks to bleached pieces that combine an orangey-red and black to create a sort of soot-fire-rebelion feeling to them, a style Mary Weather refers to as “space grunge.” These pieces are particularly awesome because they could totally be dressed up or down. I could imagine them as pieces in quite a number of costumes, as well being worn to bring some personality to an everyday outfit.

If you haven’t been to 15th street lately, you need to go and check it out.

First google the street and look at the pictures from 2011. Then go over there and see the world of difference for yourself.

The store is also a community gathering space

and a part of a tight knit collection of artistic types and spaces. Also on 15th St, you can find Side Quest Gallery, Omiroo, and Naming Gallery. Lequivive Gallery is just around the corner on Webster.

15th St participated in Oakland Drops Beats,

holding a street fair that drew quite a crowd, and housing a stage with performers, open galleries, a coffee and beer stand for your thirst-quenching needs, cupcakes, clothing, small presses and of course the many pooches of Oakland. The street has really transformed into quite a funky, lively place for artists, fashionistas, admirers of creativity and community members to mingle in.

Judy is a part of her community.

Back in February, she hosted a 24-hour event with live painting, and readings, providing a space for around the clock gathering. The event was inspired by British artists, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas, who did a similar 24-hour open store on Saturday nights to foster community and interaction, in the 1990’s. At Oakland Drops Beats, she was wandering around talking to everyone, getting on the mic to thank everyone for coming and generally having fun.

Artist Zachary Sweet currently has work up at Mary Weather.

One of his pieces is featured in my article: How to Friday Oakland Style: Singles Edition. Annie Steiner also houses her Vintage Clothing at Mary Weather.
