Society has long underestimated the power of the woman. Women’s Centers International started about 9,500 miles away in Nairobi, Kenya. This, the first center of the organization opened in 2012 to “improve the resource base and life options of women living in the city’s many slums.” They offer education in literacy, healthful lifestyles, stress management, sex and computers.

Oakland, CA will be the first US center and the Sewn Seeds Cycles of Fruition Fashion Performance and Benefit at the California Ballroom raised money to support the birth and subsequent nurturing of this center.

To start there were delicious little slices of bruschetta heaven, Mexican Wedding cookies, and strawberry cupcakes organized by Alison Mata.  Chocolate from Vice. Beautiful, positive people wearing their voices,  a silent auction and local designers who recycle clothing and fabric to make new exciting things.

The Silent Auction included things like original art, a six hour sail on the bay with lunch, a trip to Disneyland, a girls day out, etc.

FRIVOLOUS ARTIFICE by Holly:

At 17 years old she was a mere 65lbs and had trouble finding clothes that fit. She then began making her own clothes. Inspired by the 1920’s and 1930’s, she scours local closets and flea markets, finding long forgotten beautiful fabrics. She makes custom pieces using materials such as satin and brocade.

Sof T. the collapsible institute:

This collection really told a story. Each model held an item that was then added to the group picnic at the end. A lesson for life.

WYSTERIUM WEAR by Monica Griffin:

Offers a dark romance with great tailoring and richly layered textures. Some pieces are made from reconstructed fabric, but many others are created “from the very raw beginning” and are not things previously made and then embellished.
