In this episode of White Fragility Weekly, it appears that white folks are having a meltdown over Mall of America’s first Black Santa Claus. Larry Jefferson, retired U.S. Army veteran from Irving, Texas, was scouted at a Santa convention in Missouri last summer. Out of 1,000 Santas at this convention, he was the only one of color. Jefferson told reporters, “They’re far and few between. That’s why I do it.” Nice, heartwarming Christmas miracle in the land of equal opportunity, right? WRONG.

Once again, white people lost their shit! Let’s take a look:

The Minneapolis Star Tribune’s comments section got so racist and out of control, the dialogue about this historic event had to be shut down. “Looks like we had to turn comments off on story about Mall of America’s first black Santa. Merry Christmas everyone!” Scott Gillespie, editor of The Minneapolis Star Tribune wrote. This is America in 2016.

But Jefferson appears unbothered. He put it very simply in an interview with CBS Minnesota: “It’s no big deal, I’m still Santa, I just happen to be a Santa of Color.”

Merry Christmas, Post-Racial America!

Black Santa Larry Jefferson.
