It is officially spring, but it feels a lot like summer. I’ve been wearing shorts and tanks while running or hiking and have been spending my free time reading (you guys, Where’d You Go, Bernadette is really entertaining) outside in my bikini. IT’S MARCH. Bay Area weather, if you’re gonna act like summer weather, we gonna treat you like summer weather…anddressaccordingly. So now that it’s sun’s out guns out, let’s treat those body skin problems that, trust me, we all deal with and get you bikini ready!
1. Body Acne. This is such an embarrassing one to deal with, but why? So many people deal with this issue. We’re all in this one together. We all get sweaty. We all get hormonal. The solution that has worked for both my brother and myself came from my friend slash coworker Allie and I haven’t broken out since. Get yourself a loofah or brush body scrubber (replace every couple months) and any brand of Pink Grapefruit Acne Body Wash that you desire. In the shower, use the loofah and acne body wash and scrub your problem areas (I don’t use this all over my body because it can be pretty drying). Within a week, I noticed a drastic clearing up of my skin!
2. Arm Bumps. The fancy name for this epidermal annoyance is Keratosis Pilaris. It is basically an excess of keratin and dead skin cells plugging up your hair follicles making bumps. Gross! There are a few things I have done, past and present, that have helped with this issue.
- Gently exfoliate with just a washcloth. I mean gently. If you do it too harshly, the bumps can become inflamed and get worse.
- Exfoliate with a gentle scrub. I’ve fallen in love with Alba’s Sugar Cane Body Polish and I can’t get up.
- Use body lotions with alpha-hydroxy acids like AmLactin. It’s kind of intense, but AmLactin is really effective. And it’s fragrance free!
3. Scars. I used to be hyper sensitive about my scars. I have so many of them ranging from biopsy scars to minor surgeries to burning myself in the oven to a sharp branch attacking me on a hike. But, at this point, I can’t tell if I’ve embraced them or just stopped noticing them as a big deal. Either way, if you’re not at this point yet, buy yourself some Mederma with SPF 30, Vitamin E oil, and Kelo-cote Advance Formula Scar Gel. This will take patience and persistence (you’re gonna have to reapply a shit load of times).
4. Cellulite. First things first, the post that shames ScarJo’s body stating that she “looks like hell” while having “cellulite at the age of 27” is sickening and fucked up. Sometimes cellulite happens. It happens to all different body shapes and sizes. Sometimes, it’s just genetics. It’s okay. But, if you feel self-conscious about it, I want to help.
- Dry Brushing. Before your shower, with a brush with natural bristles, brush your legs in long sweeping motions toward your heart. Don’t brush back and forth or in circles on your legs. On your belly, brush in a counterclockwise motion. You don’t want to brush so hard that you irritate the skin, just hard enough to stimulate the skin.
- Coffee Scrub. The caffeine in coffee will help tighten your skin while the scrubbing will help to stimulate blood flow.
- Clarins Body Lift Cellulite Control. Pricey AF but it works like a goddamn charm at firming up those legs.
