When I first walked into Good Stock, I thought I had died and gone to skincare heaven. I was immediately overwhelmed with excitement and stood in the doorway completely awestruck for almost literally five minutes. Jars of body scrubs nonchalantly stacked on tiled countertops, a perfect lineup of face oils and serums on rustic shelving units, and a beautiful chandelier that looked like bubbles falling from the ceiling all made my eyeballs fall in love with the place.
My brain and heart fell in love with the place when I met Haley, the store manager, who warmly greeted and welcomed me into Good Stock. She was so kind, fun, and knowledgeable about all the products in the store. She knew where everything was made, the best products for my specific skin type, and even shared some of her own skincare tips!
Many of the products at Good Stock are all natural. Which I love. When I put the Mermaid Mane Sea Salt Spray ($24, gotta have my surf spray) up to my nose to smell, I faintly identified the smell of geranium essential oil. When I checked, sure enough, among the few natural ingredients listed was the geranium essential oil! After that moment, Mermaid Mane Sea Salt Spray immediately jumped to the top of my “Good Stock Must Haves” list. When you can smell individual ingredients, you know it’s good!
Good Stock also has a wonderful selection of Ilia products. Ilia is a line of organic beauty products that is not only all natural but also highly pigmented and nourishing. I loved the Ilia Multi-Stick in Cheek-to-Cheek ($34) for cheeks and lips. It’s a great rosy blush for spring! I was also very impressed by the Ilia Illuminator in Cosmic Dancer ($34). I blended some in above my cheekbones and it added a wonderfully subtle glow and shimmer.
Now that it’s spring, it’s time to get back into the sunscreen groove, although hopefully you have been wearing sunscreen 24/7/365 (if you haven’t, I’m mad at you and now we’re in a fight WEAR SUNSCREEN). Good Stock sells a great tinted moisturizer, that Haley swears by, called Suntegrity ($45). It is a lightweight tinted moisturizer, great to use as a primer, doesn’t have all the harsh chemicals used in big name sunscreens, and is a pretty reasonable price for the size of the tube!
The store also has a wonderful little trial room with floor-to-ceiling shelves lined with shampoos, conditioners, and hair styling products. The room has a little sink so you can test out the body scrubs and oils without having oily hands for the rest of the day!
In addition to all of these amazing skincare and beauty products, Good Stock also has delicious candles, beautiful jewelry, fun purses and totes, and adorable makeup bags. It’s kind of a dangerous place. You could go in there with every intention of just buying more of your favorite face cream, but then leave with that and their newest face oil and a cute new makeup bag (because, let’s face it, yours was getting old and dirty) and a cute necklace for your best friend (her birthday is coming up, right?) and a new pair of sunnies (well, I’m not having a 2014 summer in my 2013 sunglasses DUUUH). You get what I mean. I want to live in this store.
So, I ended up leaving the store with the Fig & Yarrow Black Charcoal powder clay mask ($16). I couldn’t wait to try it out for it’s detoxifying and pore clearing powers. Before mixing and applying the mask, I made sure to take off all my makeup and do a lavender herbal steam (sounds fancy, but it’s just me with my face over a simmering pot of water with 5 drops of lavender essential oil, sweating). To make the mask a mask, you use a small amount of the powder and mix with either water, plain yogurt or raw honey until it reaches the desired consistency. I tried it first with water. My mom liked that more than I did. It dried too quickly and when I moved my face at all, black powder flaked off all over me. But, when I took the mask off, my skin felt really elastic and springy! I loved the mask with yogurt, though. I used a teaspoon of plain greek and 1/2 teaspoon of the powder and painted it on my face with one of those meat brushes. I loved it. My skin felt clean, tight, refreshed, but not dried out. Fig & Yarrow also has a gold mask and a rose mask that Good Stock sells. I highly hiiighly recommend this mask. Plus, look how cool I am wearing it.
The moral of this story: GET YOUR BUCKET TO GOOD STOCK RIGHT NOW IF YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOOD FOR YOU.
