Apparently there was a big football game this weekend called The Super Bowl. Never heard of it, but I guess it’s pretty popular. Everyone’s favorite love-to-hate-her pop star Katy Perry performed, including her early hit “I Kissed a Girl.” I hate that song, I find it offensive, fetishizing and far too focused on the male gaze. But I am very attracted to Katy Perry and am a secret fan of many of her songs hear she is pretty supportive of gay rights now, so that’s nice. [Note: A friend alerted me to the fact that Katy is often quoted saying transphobic things, like “these transvestite girls” and using the word “tranny.” Not okay.] Watch her dancing with super-talented folks in shark costumes who are doing intricately choreographed moves, and not just waving their fins around out of sync with each other.

There’s a lot of talk about Bruce Jenner transitioning. All I really know about Bruce Jenner is that this person is vaguely connected to the Kardashians. If the transition rumors are true, I wish Bruce all the best. I have read several articles about this story and am unsettled by how every single one says “he” is transitioning to a woman. If this is true, we should use female pronouns for Bruce. (Since the story is still unconfirmed, I am avoiding pronouns altogether). And also if this is true, let’s all calm down, congratulate her, honor her new gender and stop making such a big deal about it.

President Obama unveiled his new budget, but I know you know that, because we are all very good at following politics and love to listen to hours-long speeches about statistics and budgets. He included a call for the Social Security Act to be amended to ensure gay married couples still get access to those benefits, even in states that don’t recognize gay marriage. Aw, that was thoughtful, Obama. Good luck getting it through our Republican-controlled Congress! Sigh.

News Too Sad To Joke About:

My mom grew up in Spokane, and my parents met there, so that little city in Washington has a special place in my heart. So I am extremely saddened to report that a transgender woman there named Jacina Carla Scamahorn was brutally attacked, and the police so far have not made any arrests and will not call it a hate crime.

In other horrifying news, a transgender woman named Yazmin Vash Payne was stabbed to death in her own home in Los Angeles this past weekend. This is the fifth known murder of an LGBT person of color in 2015, and the third murder of a transgender woman of color in Southern California in four months. I am horrified, I am outraged, and I am saddened. Everyone should know about the violent, unsafe, cruel, often fatal hatred that trans folks, and especially trans women of color, face on a daily basis. And we should all be very, very angry.
