The Yulin Dog Meat festival in rural China began on June 21st, to the indignation of many American animal rights activists. The festival began in 2009 as a way to attract tourists to the area by capitalizing on a Yulin tradition. Due to the nature of the festival, China is becoming a focus of worldwide scrutiny for animal cruelty. However, according to Chinese officials, this practice is in no way a nation-wide tradition and the fact folks believe it to be is “embarrassing.” Also embarrassing is the group of animal welfare activists who targeted Chinese-Americans in New York City’s Chinatown to protest Yulin– basically the equivalent of Chinese activists protesting in a Shanghai McDonald’s.

Orange is the New Black has been all over the news this week after their controversial fourth season aired. At the same time, actress Diane Guerrero, who plays inmate Maritza Ramos in the show, released her memoir, In the Country We Love: My Family Divided. The book chronicles Guerrero’s struggles with depression, homelessness, and alcoholism after her parents’ deportation to Colombia when she was 14.

The Supreme Court upheld affirmative action in the case of Fisher V University of Texas, Austin. The case surrounded a white girl who claimed she was denied admission to the college due to her race. Yeah, right, “Becky with the Bad Grades.”

Unfortunately, the courts didn’t keep up their good streak in the case of Caesar Goodman, one of the cops prosecuted in the Freddie Gray trial. While Goodman faced the most serious charges of the six officers accused, the courts acquitted him Thursday.

Democrats in the House of Representatives staged a sit in to push for gun control after all efforts to pass legislation on the matter was stymied by the Republican party.

Finally, the fun news this week:

Footballer Adam Lindin Ljungkvist was given a red card during a Swedish soccer game this week for, no joke, farting.  Apparently, the ref found it to be “deliberate provocation.” Ljungkvist speculated that perhaps this ref thought he “farted in his hand and threw it at him,” but he did not. Gotta love it.
